IMPORTANT!: You need premium membership to be able to use our IMAP/SMTP server.

iPhone/iPad does not have any built in PGP-support, however you can use it to send non-PGP-encrypted email. The following instructions will only work for premium users:

Basic setup for IMAP and SMTP

Please click here for a step by step guide with pictures.
  1. If it's your first email account on your iPhone, click Mail. Otherwise, click Settings and "Mail, Contacts, Calendars"
  2. Select "Add Account" from the "Mail" menu
  3. Select "Other"
  4. Select "IMAP" and enter your name in the "Name" field, your full email address (you@countermail.com) in the "Address" field and a description for the account in the "Description" field
  5. Scroll down and input the settings for your Incoming Mail Server. Enter "imap1.countermail.com" in the "Host Name" field. Enter your full email address in the "User Name" field and your IMAP-key in the "Password" field. You can find your IMAP-key in our webmail interface under Settings / Preferences / Security & Keys / and click on the button [Show keys]. The IMAP-key is always 32 characters long.
  6. Scroll down and input the settings for the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP). Enter "imap1.countermail.com" in the "Host Name" field. Enter your full email address in the "User Name" field and your IMAP-key in the "Password" field. You must write your username in lowercase letters. You can find your IMAP-key in our webmail interface under Settings / Personal Information / and click on the button [Show keys]
  7. Press the "Save" button in the top right hand side of the screen
  8. You will then see a screen saying "Mail" is "ON". Press "Save" in the top right hand side of the screen
  9. This will then add your mail account and it will be listed under "Accounts". Press your account name to configure further settings
  10. Click the "Advanced" options
  11. Ensure that the Outgoing Server is set as:
    Server Port: 465
    Use SSL: ON
    Authentication: MD5 Challenge-Response
  12. Ensure that the Incoming Server is set as:
    Server Port: 993
    Use SSL: ON
    Authentication: MD5 Challenge-Response

This completes your IMAP/SMTP account setup.

PLEASE NOTE:
Your IMAP-key must be entered correctly in the password fields, otherwise you will not be able to connect. If you change the password on your webmail account (or activate our USB-key), you must enter the new IMAP-key into your iPhone account settings, both incoming and outgoing.

Before doing anything more, you can send a test email to yourself.

If you want to be able to read the whole email-Body from non-PGP-senders you have two ways of setting up your phone. If you also want to be able to read PGP-encrypted emails you must use Alt.2:

Alt. 1

Easy but less secure! Disable our Cron-job from running on your account, you can do this in our webmail interface, go to Settings / Preferences / Security & Keys and select "Disable" in the "Encryption method for unencrypted emails"-selectbox. WARNING! This will decrease the security, since all non-PGP emails will be stored on our servers in unencrypted form.

Alt. 2

Install a PGP app (recommend method). You can use the app called https://canarymail.io/

Export keys

Login to your web mail account from your computer, Go to Settings / Public keys / click on the "Export keys"-button located at the bottom.
Under Preferences / Security & Keys , click on [Download Public key] and [Download private key]
These key-files (* . asc) should be imported into your PGP-application
